Argentina beat Cuba 4-1 last night in the Nafaldo Cargnel Stadium, and with this result secured its presence in the men's tournament softboll of Toronto 2015 Pan American Games.
The South Americans made the difference early in the game, and then relied on their pitching to tie the hands of the Cuban offense.
Bruno Motroni gave Argentina the lead in the very first episode. With two outs on the board, the Argentine receiver found a release of Javier Caballero and deposited the ball into the stands left, causing euphoria and putting the public at selected local advantage. The South Americans made the difference early in the game, and then relied on their pitching to tie the hands of the Cuban offense.
But the Cuban team was not far behind, and at the close of the same episode tied the game with an RBI single Yessander Rodriguez, prompting Juan Carlos Rodriguez, who had received free ticket.
Argentina again made use of the power to add homer in the second, this time it was Mariano Montero that hit solid center field, and brought him walking Ladislao Malarczuck to put the game 3-1.
The team continued adding Eduardo Sabaté at the opening of the fourth inning. Gustavo Godoy negotiated ticket Malarczuck sacrificed to bring it to second and Juan Cruz Zara brought him home with a single to right, putting the game 4-1.
From there the pitchers took control of the game, stopping any offensive intent. The winning pitcher was starter Argentine Maximiliano Montero, who released 2+ entries and allowed 1 hit and 1 run with 2 free ticket and 3 strikeouts. In relief, Juan Potolicchio was untouchable during the 5 periods launched, allowing just 1 hit and striking out 13 Cuban hitters. The loss was to Javier Caballero.
Motroni and Mariano Montero led the national offensive. The receiver went 2 hits in 3 innings, 1 run scored and 1 RBI. Meanwhile, center fielder batted February 2, 2 RBI, 1 run scored.
Cuba with a win and four defeats vera today's Guatemala.
Thus Argentina will be in the next edition of the Pan American Games, and will look to medal again, after Santo Domingo did in 2003, the last Games in the Men's Softball was present.
